The Hussman Funds are diversified, no-load mutual funds intended for investors seeking long-term investment returns, with added emphasis on capital protection in unfavorable market conditions. The mission of the Hussman Funds is to improve the financial freedom and security of our shareholders in a way that will improve lives. Our goal is not only to invest for long-term returns, but to manage risk so that our shareholders can confidently maintain their saving and investment programs over the long-term. Hussman Strategic Advisors serves as the advisor to the Hussman Funds. Our offices are located in Howard County, Maryland. The majority of our after-tax management income is directed to charitable and philanthropic projects both directly and through the Hussman Foundation . We have no sales or marketing division, and no advertising program. Our goal is to have satisfied, well-informed long-term shareholders, and we actively discourage short-term investments. Our staff is friendly, self-directed, and distinctly research-driven. More often than not, we have open textbooks on our desks and some sort of computer code in progress on one of several screens in front of us. We are skeptical of much of the received wisdom on Wall Street, and this skepticism draws from staring at a large volume of financial data and testing every aspect of our investment process. The office culture is pleasant, diligent, collaborative, and reasonably peaceful even in volatile markets, as our investment approach is far more responsive than it is reactive. Position: Financial Engineer / Financial Analyst This position is suitable both for highly technical quantitative researchers with a strong engineering background, and for mathematically adept but less technically specialized individuals having a strong background in financial markets, quantitative methods, and economics. Success in this position involves the ability to: 1) Apply high-level analytical techniques (digital signal processing, PCA, state-space models, factor models, statistical estimation) as well as traditional financial tools (discounted cash flow models, portfolio optimization) to extract information, model relationships, estimate and manage risk, evaluate prospective return, test and cross-validate new investment strategies, and infer unobserved variables in financial, economic and other data; 2) Work in coordination with programming staff to embody analytical methods in computer code and create user interfaces (Matlab, Excel, C++) to enable their real-time application in financial management; 3) Write periodic research articles of interest to shareholders, providing useful information at a reduced technical level to address prevailing investment conditions and current investment questions with suitable historically-based research findings. We are interested in individuals who have a nearly insatiable curiosity and intellectual interest in discovering new knowledge; ask insightful questions and generate interesting hypotheses; write and explain complex ideas well; are comfortable working with equations and data, including the ability to obtain, aggregate, clean and impute financial and economic series; and have the initiative to learn and apply new methods and techniques as required. To apply for this position, please send your resume, along with responses to the pre-interview questions for the Financial Engineer / Analyst position, to Hussman Strategic Advisors, 5136 Dorsey Hall Drive, Ellicott City, 21042. We ask applicants to refrain from calling the office directly, visiting the office without being contacted for an interview, or hand-delivering resumes or other materials. Position: Advisor Relations Manager This position is suitable for individuals with a background in finance, alternative investments, business presentation, teaching, and communication. Success in this position involves the ability to: 1) Explain and discuss the investment advisor's views and current evaluation of risk and return in various financial markets, including the importance of a full-cycle investment horizon when pursuing and evaluating risk-managed investment approaches. This is not a sales or marketing position - the primary objective is to inform, and to help shareholders identify relevant objectives, risks, diversification benefits, and other considerations that may or may not make the Hussman Funds suitable for their or their clients' portfolios. This includes discouraging investments by investors having short investment horizons or a strong desire to track benchmark indices over periods shorter than a complete market cycle. 2) Clearly explain the investment approaches pursued in each of the Hussman Funds, and the mechanics of those strategies, including how the Funds manage risk through hedging equity exposure or managing bond duration; the differences between popular valuation models and the normalized, discounted cash flow approach used by the Funds for stock selection and market evaluation; the mechanics of hedge construction using put and call option combinations; and other technical aspects of our risk management and investment process. 3) Communicate and fulfill periodic requests for information by completing investor questionnaires and due diligence reports; prepare and deliver presentations to shareholders and financial planners in person or by teleconference; and work in coordination with our shareholder services group to provide prompt responses to shareholder requests for information about the Funds. 4) Expand the frequency and detail of advisor communications through the design and creation of quarterly reports and advisor background material, including PowerPoint slides, presentation books, and tear sheets. We are interested in an individual who enjoys communicating with and educating current and prospective shareholders; has a thorough understanding of risk-managed investment strategies and their unique features such as tracking risk and the appropriateness of full-cycle performance measures; can produce high-quality business presentations using PowerPoint and other software packages; is prompt and disciplined in preparing and returning correspondence and responding to information requests. A background in finance and communications is essential. Graphic design skills and web design experience are a plus.
